In a new correspondence piece published in The Lancet Regional Health-Europe, researchers Amy Heshmati, Helena Honkaniemi, and Sol P Juárez discuss the implications of a policy reform proposal that would introduce residence-based requirements for accessing social security benefits.
The reform has been framed as a way to incentivise employment and reduce long-term benefit dependency, yet is expected to disproportionately affect migrant residents by excluding them from core welfare protections. In the correspondence, the authors discuss the potential consequences of the reform for the development of health and social inequalities in Sweden.
